UK: Only a quarter of British Muslims believe Hamas committed the 7.10 atrocities
The results show that "anti-extremism policies have failed" and confirm that "much work remains to be done" to challenge old anti-Semitic tropes.
A poll commissioned by the Henry Jackson Society (HJS) found that 46% of British Muslims said they sympathised with Hamas.
The survey, the largest of its kind since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas last year, asked a series of questions to British Muslims and the wider public.
The study was completed on the six-month anniversary of the 7 October massacre, when Hamas terrorists invaded Israel, killing around 1 200 citizens and taking 253 people hostage.
The survey also found that just over half (52%) of British Muslims want to make it illegal to display the image of Mohammed, compared to just 16% of the general public.
A third of British Muslims (32%) want the UK to adopt Sharia law, while around 9% of all citizens would agree to an Islamic theocracy.
Very perversely, younger and well-educated Muslims were the most likely to be radicalised, and to believe that Hamas did not commit the atrocities of 7 October.
Among 18-24 year olds, the proportion was 47% and among the highly educated 40%.
Fiyaz Mughal, founder of the interfaith groups 'Tell Mama', 'Faith Matters' and 'Muslims Against Anti-Semitism', said the findings were "shocking but not surprising".
He said: "Hamas is an extremist Islamist terrorist group that has terrorised Gazans, Israelis and liberals in society for decades."
"The claim that Hamas did not commit massacres and rapes in Israel is appalling, because it shows a closed mentality to all things Israeli," Mughal concluded.
The survey was carried out by JL Partners, a UK-based polling firm founded by James Johnson, the now retired and highly respected Downing Street official.1
